SMART Repair Explained: What It Is and What It Suits

SMART repair means small and medium area repair technology — a contained repair to part of a panel. What it fixes well, what it cannot do, and what it costs.

6 min read

SMART stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Technology. It means repairing only the damaged section of a panel rather than preparing and respraying the whole thing — so it costs less, takes less time, and keeps more of the factory paint on the car.

It is not a lesser repair. On the right damage a SMART repair is the correct method and the result is permanent. On the wrong damage it is a false economy, and a good bodyshop will tell you which yours is.

What SMART repair suits

  • Bumper scuffs and scrapes, the most common SMART job of all
  • Small localised scratches within one area of a panel
  • Stone chips and small paint chips on edges and bonnets
  • Small dents where the paint is broken, so paintless removal is not an option
  • Alloy wheel kerbing and scuffed wheel rims
  • Small trim, mirror cap and plastic damage
  • Interior plastic, vinyl and leather scuffs

What it cannot do

  • Damage spread across a whole panel, or across more than one panel
  • Long scratches running the length of a car
  • Creased or torn metal, or anything structural
  • Failing or peeling lacquer, which needs the panel taking back properly
  • Damage sitting on a sharp body line or panel edge, where the repair boundary is hard to disguise
  • Some pearl and three-stage colours, where a contained repair cannot be blended convincingly and a full panel is the safer answer

How the process works

The area is cleaned and masked off, the damage flatted back, filled where needed, primed and then sprayed with colour matched to the car as it is now. The clear coat is applied and the edge of the repair is faded and blended into the surrounding paint, then flatted and polished so there is no detectable boundary.

The skill is entirely in that boundary. A poor SMART repair shows as a dull patch, a hard edge, or a slight colour shift when the light moves across it. A good one cannot be found.

Cost and turnaround

As an indicative UK guide, most SMART repairs run £120-£300, with bumper scuffs commonly £120-£250 and alloy wheel refurbishment in a similar range per wheel. Many are completed the same day or next day, against two to three days for a full panel refinish.

Compare that with £250-£500 to refinish a whole panel and the case is clear — provided the damage genuinely suits the method.

Where it makes most sense

  • Lease and PCP returns, where end-of-contract damage charges are far higher than the repair
  • Fleet and company vehicles that need to stay on the road
  • Selling a car, where tidy paintwork adds more than the repair costs
  • Any damage below your insurance excess

Not sure which you need?

Send a photograph on WhatsApp with the make, model and year. We will tell you straight whether a SMART repair will do the job properly or whether the panel needs refinishing — we would rather turn a SMART job down than hand back a repair you can see.

Frequently asked questions

What is a SMART repair?
SMART stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Technology. It is a contained repair to the damaged part of a panel — flatted, primed, colour-matched, sprayed and blended into the surrounding paint — rather than preparing and respraying the whole panel.
How much does a SMART repair cost?
Typically £120-£300 as a UK guide, with bumper scuffs commonly £120-£250. Cost depends on the size of the area, the paint type and how difficult the colour is to blend.
How long does a SMART repair take?
Most are completed in a few hours, so same-day or next-day is usual, compared with two to three days for a full panel respray.
Is a SMART repair permanent?
Yes, when the damage suits the method and the work is done properly. It uses the same primers, basecoats and clear coats as a full refinish; the difference is the area treated, not the durability.
