How much does a deep scratch on a car cost to repair

Deep scratch repair cost explained: how to tell if a scratch reached primer or bare metal, why filling and refinishing cost more, and how to get an estimate.

The short answer

The cost depends on scratch depth, length, panel count, paint finish and whether polishing, a local repair or panel refinishing is required. A free, no-obligation estimate confirms the cost for your vehicle.

For a driver with a scratch that has clearly gone past the surface, who wants to know how deep is deep and why that changes the bill.

Deep scratch costs in short

  • Deep means through the colour, to primer or bare metal.
  • Preparation, paint depth and refinishing area affect the cost
  • Preparation, paint depth and refinishing area affect the cost
  • Sealing exposed metal early avoids a bigger repair later.

What counts as a deep scratch

Car paint is built up in layers: a hard clear lacquer on top, the colour coat underneath, then primer, then the metal or plastic of the panel itself. A shallow scratch only marks the lacquer. A deep scratch is one that has cut through the colour so that you can see the layer below it, usually a dull grey or white primer, or a bright silver line where the bare metal is exposed.

The quickest home check is the fingernail test. Run a nail gently across the line. If it glides over, the mark is probably in the lacquer. If the nail catches and drops into a groove, the scratch has gone deeper and polishing on its own will not remove it.

Why depth changes the method

  • Lacquer only: the surface can often be refined and machine polished, with no paint needed.
  • Through the colour: fresh colour is needed, often as a localised blend so the repair melts into the original paint.
  • Down to primer: the groove is filled and levelled first, then colour and lacquer go back on top.
  • Down to bare metal: the exposed metal is treated and primed before filling and refinishing, so it is sealed against moisture.

Other things that move a deep scratch price

Depth is the biggest factor, but it is not the only one. A scratch that runs across two panels is two repairs, because each panel is prepared and painted in its own right. Metallic and pearl colours take more care to blend than solid colours, as the flake has to line up with the paint around it. A line that sits on a crease or along the edge of a door needs more shaping and masking than one on a flat area.

Plastic panels such as bumpers behave differently from steel ones. There is no rust risk on plastic, but a deep gouge may need a flexible filler and careful sanding so the repair does not crack when the bumper flexes.

Why not to leave a deep scratch

Once a scratch reaches bare steel, moisture can get to the metal and corrosion can start to creep under the paint either side of the line. The longer that goes on, the larger the area that has to be taken back and refinished. Getting a deep scratch sealed sooner is usually the cheaper route than waiting.

Getting a price for your scratch

  1. 01Wash the area so the true depth is visible, then photograph it in daylight from a distance and close up.
  2. 02Note whether the line crosses onto a second panel.
  3. 03Send the photos with your make, model and location by WhatsApp or through the quote form.
  4. 04We will reply with a free, no-obligation estimate, or ask to see the car at our workshop in Harlington if photos are not enough.

Questions people ask us

How do I know if a car scratch is deep?
Run a fingernail across it. If the nail catches in a groove, or you can see grey, white or silver at the bottom of the line, the scratch has gone through the colour and needs a paint repair rather than polishing.
Can a deep scratch be buffed out?
No. Polishing removes a very thin layer of lacquer, so it can only improve marks that sit in the clear coat. A scratch through to primer or metal has to be filled and refinished.
Is a deep scratch on a bumper cheaper to fix than on a door?
Not always. A plastic bumper has no rust risk, but it needs flexible materials and careful preparation. The depth, the size of the area and the paint finish matter more than which panel it is on.
Will a deep scratch rust?
It can if it has reached bare steel and is left open to the weather. Sealing the metal with primer and paint as part of the repair is what stops that happening.
How do I get an exact price for a deep scratch?
Send clear photos with your vehicle make, model and location on WhatsApp or through our quote form. Estimates are free with no obligation.
