Restoration bodywork for older cars in Harlington

Bringing tired and older bodywork back, one panel at a time.

Car body restoration means returning worn, tired or long-neglected bodywork to a sound, even finish, rather than repairing one fresh piece of crash damage. We carry out restoration bodywork at our workshop in Harlington, near Heathrow, using the same panel beating, preparation and paint skills we use on accident repairs.

A restoration job is usually a collection of smaller problems that have built up over time: old dents nobody fixed, panels that were repaired badly years ago, paint that has faded or lost its lacquer, and areas where the original colour no longer matches its neighbours. Each one is assessed on its own merits, then the work is planned so the car comes back looking consistent from every angle.

How restoration differs from accident repair

After a collision the damage is recent and usually concentrated in one area, so the job is about putting that area back to its pre-accident state. Restoration is broader. The car may have marks on most panels, layers of previous paint, and areas where filler has been applied thickly by someone else. Before anything is sprayed we need to know what is underneath, so old work is examined and, where it is not sound, taken back and redone properly.

That is why a restoration estimate takes a little longer to prepare. We look at the car panel by panel and tell you which areas can be reshaped, which need filler work and which are best refinished as part of a wider respray.

Panel work and preparation

Panel beating is at the heart of good restoration. Where the original metal can be safely reshaped we keep it, because factory panels and seams are worth preserving. Where a panel is too far gone, we fit a replacement and set the gaps and shut lines so it sits correctly. Filler is used only where it belongs, applied thinly and shaped so the panel reads straight under light.

Preparation is where a restoration finish is won or lost. Surfaces are flatted, primed and checked before any colour is applied, and bare metal is treated and primed so the new paint has a proper base.

Paint: a refinish or a full respray

Some restoration jobs only need a handful of panels refinished and blended into the rest of the car. Others are better finished with a full respray, especially when the original paint has faded unevenly across the roof, bonnet and sides. We mix to the paint code, test the colour on a card against the car and adjust it, or we can respray in a different colour if you are planning a colour change.

Either way we will explain the options plainly, including when a full respray makes more sense than chasing individual panels.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as car body restoration?
Work to bring worn, faded or previously badly repaired bodywork back to an even, sound finish across the car, rather than repairing a single area of new accident damage.
Will you redo old repairs that someone else carried out?
Where an earlier repair is not sound, yes. We take it back, re-prepare the panel and repair it properly before it is refinished.
Do I need a full respray for a restoration?
Not always. Some cars only need several panels refinished and blended. If the paint has faded unevenly across the car, a full respray usually gives the more consistent result, and we will explain which applies.
Can you change the colour as part of a restoration?
Yes. We carry out full resprays and complete colour changes as well as matching the original paint code.
How do I get a restoration estimate?
Send photos of every side of the car on WhatsApp, then bring it to our Harlington workshop for a proper look. Estimates are free with no obligation.
