In short

The cost depends on scratch depth, length, panel count, paint finish and whether polishing, a local repair or panel refinishing is required. A free, no-obligation estimate confirms the cost for your vehicle.

For a driver with a scratch somewhere on a door, from a car park, a trolley or a garage wall, who wants to understand the repair and cost for that specific panel.

Why doors pick up so many scratches

Doors are the panels people and objects brush past most. Handles collect fine rings of scratches from nails and keys. Front edges catch walls and posts when opened in tight spaces. The lower half takes trolleys and bags in car parks, and the rear edge meets the neighbouring car's door. Each of these has its own shape and its own repair challenges.

The four common door scratches

Where the scratch is and what that means
LocationTypical causeWhat makes it tricky
Handle cupRings, nails, keysRecessed, needs careful masking round the handle
Door edgeWalls, posts, other doorsThin edge chips easily, paint must wrap round
Swage or body lineTrolleys, passing contactCrease must stay sharp after filling
Length of the doorBrushing a wall or a bollardMay need blending into the next panel

How a door scratch repair is carried out

  1. 01Inspect and measure the depth along the full length of the mark.
  2. 02Remove or mask handles, mirrors and trim so paint does not sit against rubber or chrome.
  3. 03Fill and flat any section that has gone below the colour, keeping body lines crisp.
  4. 04Prime, then apply colour and blend it out so the repair edge disappears.
  5. 05Lacquer, then finish and polish, and check the colour against the adjoining panels in daylight.

When the next panel gets involved

If the scratch finishes close to the edge of the door, the colour usually has to be faded into the wing or the other door so the eye cannot pick out a change in shade. This is normal practice for a factory-level finish, especially on metallic paint, and it is why a door scratch quote sometimes mentions a second panel.

If the door also has a dent, the dent is dealt with first. Where the paint is unbroken, paintless dent removal may be possible, otherwise the panel is repaired before the paint work starts.

Questions people ask us

Can a scratch on a door edge be repaired without painting the whole door?
Often, yes. A small edge chip or scratch can be treated as a localised repair, although the paint has to wrap neatly round the edge so it is sealed properly.
Why does the handle have to come off?
Removing or masking the handle stops paint building up against it and lets the recess be prepared properly, which gives a cleaner finish than painting around it.
My scratch runs the length of the door, is that a full respray?
Not always. It depends on depth. A long lacquer mark can be polished, while a long mark through to primer or metal is usually a door refinish, sometimes blended into the next panel.
Will the repaired door match the rest of the car?
The colour is matched and blended so the change cannot be seen, and we check it against the adjoining panels in daylight before handover.
