Cracked bumper repair cost: how plastic welding, split length, mounting tabs and parking sensors change the price, plus when a crack means a new bumper.

What it costs · 8 min read

The cost depends on the damaged area, whether the plastic needs repair, the paint finish, replacement parts and any sensor work. A free, no-obligation estimate confirms the cost for your vehicle.

For someone whose bumper has split, holed or pulled away at a clip, who wants to know whether it can be saved and what that is likely to cost.

A crack is not the same job as a scuff

A scuff is surface damage: the paint is scraped but the plastic underneath is whole. A crack means the plastic itself has split, so painting over it would simply open up again the first time the bumper flexes. The repair has to rebuild the strength of the plastic before any paint goes on, which is why cracked bumpers sit higher in the price bands than scuffs.

Our method is to plastic weld cracks and splits, reshape any distortion and then prepare the bumper with flexible primers before refinishing. Flexible primer matters because bumpers are designed to give slightly on impact, and a rigid finish would craze over time.

What pushes a cracked bumper up the range

  • Length and position of the split: a short crack on a flat face is quicker to weld than one running round a corner or into a light aperture.
  • Holes rather than cracks: a hole where plastic is missing has to be built back up, which takes longer than joining two edges.
  • Clips and tabs: when the bumper has pulled away from the car, the fixing points often snap and need rebuilding or reinforcing from behind.
  • Sensors and cameras: parking sensors in or near the damage have to be removed, refitted and checked.
  • Paint finish: metallic and pearl colours take more blending to match the wings either side.

When the honest answer is a new bumper

We only recommend replacement when a repair would not be safe or durable. That usually means the plastic is shattered in several places, large pieces are missing, or a sensor mount is broken in a way that cannot be rebuilt accurately. If that is the case we will tell you at the estimate stage and price both options where it makes sense.

Can you keep driving on a cracked bumper

A small hairline crack that is still firmly attached is mostly a cosmetic problem, but it is worth getting looked at before road vibration and cold weather make it spread. If the bumper is hanging loose, rubbing a tyre, has sharp edges sticking out, or is covering a light or number plate, do not carry on driving as normal. Loose panels can come off at speed, and a damaged number plate or light can cause problems at the roadside.

Cracks also let water and road dirt reach the brackets and sensors behind the bumper, so leaving one for months can turn a weld and refinish into something bigger.

Getting it priced

  1. 01Take a photo of the whole bumper, then close ups of the crack and anywhere it has pulled away from the body.
  2. 02Note whether any parking sensor warnings have appeared since the damage.
  3. 03Send the photos for a free, no-obligation estimate and we will say whether it is a weld and refinish or a replacement.

Questions people ask us

Can a cracked bumper really be repaired?
In most cases, yes. Cracks and splits are plastic welded and reshaped, then refinished with flexible primer, which is usually cheaper and quicker than fitting a new bumper.
Is it safe to drive with a cracked bumper?
A small crack on a bumper that is still secure is mainly cosmetic, but a bumper that is loose, rubbing a tyre or covering a light or plate should be sorted before you carry on driving normally.
Why does a broken clip cost more than a crack?
The fixing tabs hold the bumper in line with the wings and lights. Rebuilding or reinforcing them from behind is careful work, and the bumper often has to come off the car to do it.
Do parking sensors make the repair dearer?
The cost depends on the damaged area, whether the plastic needs repair, the paint finish, replacement parts and any sensor work. A free, no-obligation estimate confirms the cost for your vehicle.
Will I be told if replacement is cheaper?
Yes. We only recommend a new bumper when a repair would not be safe or durable, and where both are realistic we can price each so you can choose.
