What it costs · 7 min read

The cost depends on the damaged area, whether the plastic needs repair, the paint finish, replacement parts and any sensor work. A free, no-obligation estimate confirms the cost for your vehicle.

For a driver whose rear bumper has been marked by reversing, loading the boot or being nudged while parked, who wants to know what the fix involves and costs.

Rear bumpers wear differently from front ones

Front bumpers mostly take kerbs and stone chips. The back bumper has a different life. The top surface, just under the boot opening, is scratched every time a suitcase, pram or toolbox is slid in and out. The corners meet posts, walls and bollards when reversing. The centre gets nudged by other drivers parking up close behind.

Each of those leaves its own pattern, and knowing which you have helps explain what the repair will involve.

Three typical patterns

  • Loading lip wear: a band of fine and medium scratches along the top face. Often worn through the lacquer in places, and usually refinished as one area so it looks even.
  • Reversing corner marks: scrapes, sometimes with paint transfer, on one rear corner. Frequently a localised repair.
  • Parking nudges: marks or light scuffs in the centre, sometimes with a slight push in the plastic or a dislodged clip underneath.

Sensors and cameras at the back

Many cars carry parking sensors and sometimes a camera in the rear bumper. Paint build up over a sensor can affect how it reads, so sensors are removed or carefully masked during refinishing and checked afterwards. If a warning has appeared since the bumper was hit, mention it when you send photos so the sensor mounting can be looked at as part of the estimate.

Why a small area often means a bigger refinish

On a rear bumper, the top loading face is flat and catches the light at eye level every time you open the boot. A patch repair there can show, so it is often better to refinish the whole top face or the bumper. We will explain the choice and the cost difference rather than quoting the bigger job by default.

Steps to getting it priced

  1. 01Photograph the whole bumper straight on, then each corner and the top loading face.
  2. 02Get a close up of any split, gap or loose section.
  3. 03Send them by WhatsApp or through the quote form for a free, no-obligation estimate.

Questions people ask us

Can scratches on the top of my rear bumper be polished?
Light marks in the lacquer can be. Loading lip wear that has broken through the clear coat in places usually needs the area refinishing so the finish looks even.
Does a scratched rear bumper need to come off the car?
Not always. Many scratch and scuff repairs are done on the car with the surrounding areas masked. It usually comes off when there is a crack, a broken clip or a sensor to deal with.
Will painting my bumper affect the parking sensors?
It should not. Sensors are removed or masked during refinishing so paint does not build up on them, and they are checked afterwards.
Is a rear bumper repair cheaper than replacing it?
The cost depends on the damaged area, whether the plastic needs repair, the paint finish, replacement parts and any sensor work. A free, no-obligation estimate confirms the cost for your vehicle.
