What it costs · 7 min read
In short
The cost of replacing a car door depends mainly on whether the whole door shell has to be replaced or only its outer skin, how many parts have to be moved across from the old door, and how much painting and blending is needed so the new door matches the car. Many damaged doors do not need replacing at all, because panel beating can reshape the original. A free estimate confirms which applies to your car.

Three ways to deal with a damaged door
| Option | What it involves | When it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Repair the door | Panel beating, any filler work, then refinish | Dents and creases where the metal is not stretched or torn |
| Reskin the door | Replace only the outer skin on the original frame | Outer panel badly damaged but frame and hinges sound |
| Replace the door shell | Fit a new door and transfer all internal parts | Frame, hinge area or structure damaged |
When panel beating saves the door
Many doors that look badly damaged can be repaired. If the metal is dented or creased but not stretched or split, panel beating can restore its shape while keeping the original panel and seams.
Repair stops making sense when the metal is torn, the crease runs across a sharp swage line that cannot be restored cleanly, or the inner frame has been pushed in. In those cases the honest answer is replacement, and we will say so.
Door skin or a complete shell
A car door is two main parts: the inner frame, which carries the hinges, lock, window mechanism and wiring, and the outer skin, which is the painted panel you see. When only the skin is damaged, it can sometimes be replaced on its own, with the new skin folded and bonded around the original frame. That keeps the door's existing fittings in place.
When the frame is bent, the hinge area is damaged or the door will not shut properly, the whole shell is replaced. That is a bigger job, because everything inside has to come across to the new door.
The parts that move to the new door
- Window glass and the regulator that raises and lowers it.
- Door lock, handles and latch mechanism.
- Wiring for electric windows, mirrors, speakers and any door sensors.
- Door mirror, trims, mouldings and badges.
- Interior door card and its clips.
Why the paint is part of the cost
New doors usually arrive in primer, not in your car's colour. The door has to be prepared, colour matched to the paint code and the age of the existing paint, and refinished. To avoid a visible step in colour, the paint is normally blended into the neighbouring wing or rear door as well. Metallic and pearl finishes take more care to match than solid colours, which adds time.
Once fitted, the door's gaps and shut lines are set so it sits flush with the panels around it and closes cleanly, with seams sealed and cavities protected against corrosion.
What makes the price higher or lower
- Repair versus reskin versus full shell replacement.
- Whether the part is a new manufacturer door or another suitable panel.
- How much is inside the door, as electric features add transfer time.
- The paint finish and how far blending has to extend.
- Any damage to the pillar, sill or hinge area behind the door.
- Whether the repair is part of a wider insurance claim or paid privately.
Car door replacement in brief
- Many damaged doors can be repaired by panel beating rather than replaced.
- A reskin replaces only the outer panel when the frame is sound.
- A full shell replacement means transferring every internal part.
- Paint, blending and alignment are a large part of the work.
Questions people ask us
- Can a badly dented car door be repaired instead of replaced?
- Often, yes. If the metal is dented or creased but not stretched or torn, panel beating can reshape the original door and avoid replacement.
- What is the difference between a door skin and a door shell?
- The skin is the outer painted panel. The shell is the complete door including the inner frame. A skin can sometimes be replaced on its own when the frame is undamaged.
- Does a new door come painted?
- Usually not. It arrives in primer and has to be colour matched and refinished, normally with blending into the panels next to it.
- Why does replacing a door take longer than it looks?
- Because the glass, regulator, lock, wiring, mirror and trims all have to be moved across, and the door painted and aligned so it shuts and sits correctly.
- How do I find out whether my door needs replacing?
- Send photos of the door, including the edges and hinge side, on WhatsApp or through our quote form. We will give you a free, no-obligation estimate.

A few photos of the door and its edges are enough for us to tell you whether it can be repaired, reskinned or needs replacing.
